Great news! Sean has a really good day yesterday and good night.
He is stronger and sleeps a lot more since having the blood transfusion a few days ago.
Mommy spoke with the nurse this morning and Sean had a quiet and stable night.
(Love the word "stable"!)
He only had 1 or 2 Apnea/Bradycardia episodes during feedings. He did not DSAT at all.
When his oxygen drops it is called a DSAT, defined as: Desaturation is a decrease in the percentage of oxygen found in the circulating blood supply.
FYI....at room air we breathe 21% oxygen. This is where Sean needs to be eventually. The RNs are giving Sean a little extra oxygen...28% - 30%. Please pray that his oxygen will regulate itself and he will not need the additional oxygen.
More good news...Sean now weighs 3 lbs. 3.2 oz!

Our blue eyed baby boy!
Yesterday 2 of the RNs confirmed that Sean has blue eyes! Yippeeee!
Certainly...not that most important thing, but Mommy was hoping Sean's eyes would be blue.
Mommy & Daddy have blue eyes. Grandma & Grandpa on Daddy's side have blue eyes. And Grandpa on Mommy's side has blue eyes = Sean's blue eyes. :)
Now... for another prayer request. Being that Sean has been receiving extra oxygen to keep his oxygen at a certain level...the extra oxygen can possibly effect his site. Docs will begin to test Sean's eyes next week and continue to do so every week after he leaves the hospital. Please pray for our baby boy's site...that he has healthy eye site and no issues with his site.
Thank you all for your continued prayers!

Sean weighs 3 lbs. 3oz!
Sean had a good day yesterday. It appears that the blood transfusion really helped him!
He had few Apnea/Brady episodes and his oxygen is more stable.
The RN this morning said that Sean had no Brady episodes overnight. His oxygen dropped occasionally, but overall he did great!
He put on 110 grams since yesterday which brings him to 3 lbs. 3oz. today!
Thank you for your prayers! We are praying that Sean continues to do well with no setbacks One Day At a Time.

Sean's Journey 7.29.11
One month ago today our son was born. Happy (1 month) birthday Sean!
Sean is still very small, but we notice he is certainly bigger than he was one month ago.
He's longer and has obviously put on some weight. He's ALMOST 3 lbs.
Today Sean weighs 2lbs. 15.26 oz.
It appears that the blood transfusion has helped Sean. He looks pinker. He is having less Apnea/Brady episodes. This is when he forgets to breathe (Apnea) and his heart rate drops (Bradycardia).
His oxygen level still drops, but not as low or as frequent as it was, so we are seeing some improvement. He continues on the bubble CPAP. We hope he succeeds on the bubble CPAP. So far so good.
Sean continues to tolerate his feedings (excellent news!)
He looked very comfortable and cozy at the hospital yesterday. He's been looking more peaceful.
Most of the time, Sean has his eyes closed, but from time to time he opens both his eyes. We love seeing both his eyes open. He is so cute and sweet.
Thank you for your continued prayers...

Sean Update 7.28.11
Sean now weighs 2 lbs. 15 oz.!
His feedings continue to go well.
His oxygen continues to drop and he is/was Anemic.
Yesterday it was decided that he should have a blood transfusion.
He received the blood transfusion. So far so good.
Doctors/RNs are hoping that the blood transfusion will make him stronger and help Sean with his breathing/oxygen level.
His breathing continues to be his biggest struggle, but we have faith that he will overcome this
obstacle. He simply needs more time. With God all things are possible.
He continues on the bubble CPAP, which means all his breaths are his own.
Please continue to pray for a precious baby boy.

Sean Update 7.27.11
Yesterday morning Sean was placed on the bubble CPAP. All of his breaths are now his own. The CPAP helps keep his lungs expanded by applying pressure.
Our hope is that he continues to do well on the bubble CPAP. If so, he will eventually be taken off the CPAP entirely.
Sean continues to do well with his feedings.
His oxygen continues to drop from time to time, but mostly during feeding time.
So far no blood transfusion has been needed.
Please pray that he continues to do well and succeeds on the bubble CPAP.

Sean Update 7.26.11
Doctors are slowly weaning Sean off CPap. Today they may try to put him back on the Bubble CPap. The difference is that he will not receiving the extra 30 breaths per minute. He will be receiving pressure only from the CPap. They tried this a couple of weeks ago, but Sean was not yet ready. He still needed the extra breaths per minute. He got too tired from breathing on his own.
Please pray that he is strong enough to handle the Bubble CPap.
Sean continues to tolerate feedings. He is now getting 28 cc's every 3 hours.
His oxygen continues to drop, but mosting during feeding time. It may be due to acid reflux. This is common for Preemies during feedings. Sean gained more weight! He's at 2 lbs. 14oz.
Sean has not yet needed a blood transfusion. Please pray that when/if he does need one, all will go well with the transfusion.

Sean Update 7.25.11
Sean had some ups and downs over the weekend, but overall he was good.
He now weighs 2 lbs 13 oz. :)
He's still small, but we can notice the he has grown.
Mommy had a excellent experience holding him on Saturday.
We are bonding as best as we can for now. He's cute and sweet.
Sean had both his eyes wide open for Mommy & Daddy on Sunday.
His eyes look blue, but not completely sure...just yet.
We look forward to when we can see his entire face. It's difficult to see with his cap and the C-Pap machine.
He continues to tolerate his feedings.
Sean still needs support with his breathing which is why he needs the C-Pap machine.
We were told that he may become Anemic and may need a blood transfusion. He is producing his own
red blood cells, but they may not be enough. It's common for preemies his size to need a blood transfusion.
I've spoken with a couple of Mom's who have had their babies in the NICU and the babies were transfused with blood bank blood and the babies are fine.
Please pray that if Sean needs a blood transfusion that he will not have any complications from the blood he receives.
We love our baby boy.

Daddy changes Sean's tiny diaper
I must admit Daddy does a better job at changing Sean's diaper than I do.
It's his attention to detail. He is really good!
It's a different experience changing the diaper of a preemie than a full term baby.
Mommy will get a hang of it. Daddy's already a Pro.

Yesterday Sean had a good day.
His feedings continue to go well.
He is now getting 26 cc's + they are giving him an extra 26 calories to help him put on more weight.
Mommy was able to hold him again for about an hour.
His oxygen was more stable and he is remembering to breathe on his own.
I spoke with the RN this morning. Overall, Sean had a good night.
Sean put on a little more weight! He is now at 2 lbs. 10.7oz.

Yesterday afternoon Sean had a few ups and downs.
His oxygen level dropped quite a few times. A couple hours later, he was doing well.
Daddy was able to hold him for the first time last night for a little over an hour. Sean looked peaceful and content on Daddy's chest.
This morning I spoke with the RN and she said Sean had a good night. Only 1 Brady episode all night.
His oxygen level appears to be more stable.
We are praying that he continues to do well.

Sean Update 7.21.11
Sean had another good day/night.
What I define as good is less Apnea/Brady's and no major changes for the worse.
Yesterday, I was able to hold him again for 2 whole hours! It was awesome!
He was so sweet & content. I love holding our baby.
Daddy will attempt to hold him for the first time tonight.
We are hoping and praying that Sean will be up for it tonight. Daddy really wants to hold him.
He is still tolerating his feedings which is really good news.
His oxygen continues to drop, but not as bad.
He is still on the C-Pap + 30 breaths per minute.
Thank you for your continued prayers for our baby boy.

Sean Update 7.20.11
Today Sean is 3 weeks old!
Sean had another good day/night.
His feedings continue to go well. He's up to 24 cc's every 3 hours.
He now weighs 2lbs. 10oz! (He weighed 2lbs. 4oz. at birth).
Sean continues to have Apnea/Brady episodes, but they are much less.
His oxygen level continues to drop at times.
The RNs and Docs say this is common behavior for Preemies.
They remind me that Sean wasn't supposed to learn to do all this just yet.
He would have still been in Mommy's womb.
He's been strong enough for Mommy to hold him the last couple of days.
I was able to hold him for 1.5 hours each day. Daddy is still waiting on his turn, but hopefully it will happen soon.
Sean is still little, but growing.
Please continue to pray that he will be able to breathe on his own and that his feedings continue to go well.
He will be able to come home when he is is able to breathe and eat on his own and when his temperature is at a normal level. We were told at approx. beginning of September.
Thank you for your prayers.

Sean Update 7.19.11
Whenever Sean has a good day or good night, we simply enjoy it because we don't know when a change will occur. As we were told from the beginning..."there are many ups and downs in the NICU".
Yesterday, Sean had a good day. He had his first bath and Mommy was able to hold him again for about 1.5 hours. It had been 4 days that he hadn't been held. We were waiting for him to be somewhat stable.
We don't know if he has a viral infection. One test showed he has some inflamation, but the Docs don't know where the inflamation is. We are waiting and hoping it just passes. RNs are keeping a close eye on Sean to check if there are any changes.
Sean is now eating 24cc's every 3 hours. He is tolerating his feedings. This is great news! We hope he continues to do well with his feedings.
He continues to be on the CPAP + 30 breaths per minute.
He is having less Apnea/Brady's. His oxygen level continues to drop from time to time.
Please continue to pray for our baby boy.

Sean gets his first bath!
When I arrived at the hospital today, the RNs were just finishing giving Sean his first bath.
It wasn't just a sponge bath, but a real bath. They placed him in a small plastic tub and got him all nice & clean.
They also changed his bedding (which they do frequently).
He looked so content.... I loved it! He likes being all nice & clean.
We love our sweet son!

Sean Update 7.18.11
Sean's weight went up slightly from yesterday. He is now at 2 lbs. 8 oz.!
He had a difficult night on Saturday. He continued to have Apnea/Brady's
I spoke with this RN this morning and he had a much better night. Only 2 Brady's. Thank God!
His oxygen level is also getting a little more normal.
Tests were given to Sean on Sunday morning because he had such a "bad" night on Saturday.
All tests came back negative except for one. The RN mentioned that it may be a viral infection.
I will find out more today when I go to the hospital. I asked if they will give anything to him for the viral infection and the RN said "No, it will need to run its course."
She asked if any of family had a cold when visiting Sean in NICU. I said, "No, but I noticed the Respitory Therapist was sneezing and shortly after Sean began sneezing." This happened on Saturday afternoon.
I'm not sure how Sean caught a viral infection (if that is what it is). I will hopefully find out more about this infection today.
It's been several days since I've been able to hold Sean. Daddy is still waiting to hold him for the first time.
We will wait patiently. When Sean is ready, we will hold him.

Sean Update 7.17.11
Sean is still doing well with his feedings. He is slowly putting on some weight.
Sean is not yet ready to breathe on his own. He still needs assistance of the C-Pap + 30 breaths per minute.
It's been an emotional roller coaster. Some days are good and other days not so good.
Daddy took Sean's temperature the other day.
Daddy spent a lot of time with Sean this weekend and saw Sean yawn.
Thank you for your continued prayers.

I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.
I read to Sean for the first time yesterday. One of my favorite childhood books: The Little Engine That Could.
He seems to enjoy the reading.... I was able to tell because his heart rate and oxygen stayed stable while I read to him.
I told Sean he can do it too....just like the Little Blue Engine who got all the dolls and toys over the mountain.
Sean is little, but he can do it!
I know he can...I know he can....I know he can....

Sean Opens His Eyes
Sean was so tiny and premature when born that his eyes were still fused together.
He opened both eyes for the first time almost one week ago on July 10th.
All week, I waited patiently for him open both eyes for Mommy.
He teased me a little by opening one eye. I guess he was winking at me. :)
Yesterday for the first time, I saw both eyes opened at the same time!
It was awesome! We still can't tell what color his eyes are.
The RN said he has blue eyes and blonde hair....like his Daddy, but we'll have to wait and see.

Sean Update 7.15.11
Whew! Sean had a much better day yesterday.
During the hours at his bedside, he had only 1 apnea/brady. It was during feeding time, so they believe it is due to acid reflux.
They put Sean back on the C-pap + the 30 breaths per minute. Our baby boy isn't quite ready to do all his breathing on his own. They tried the bubble C-pap without the assistance of the 30 breaths, but Sean is not quite ready.
As of this morning, Sean weighs 2lbs. 7.1oz. He put on 20 grams from yesterday to today.
He is now eating 23 cc's every 3 hours.
I didn't hold Sean yesterday. I decided not to because Wednesday was a tough day for all of us.
I wanted to give him a "break".
Today, I am hoping Sean is well enough and strong enough for me to hold him again.

"Tell the little guy I said Hi"
On Wednesday this week, I stopped by my Mom's (who lives 5 minutes away) to see my nephews for a few minutes before heading to the hospital.
I have two nephews, Derek who is 12 and Bryce who is 10.
Bryce was at camp, but Derek was there.
This was the first time I saw Derek since Sean's birth.
I explained to Derek that babies stay in Mom's womb for 9 months, but that Sean decided to arrive 3 months earlier. I told him that Sean will be in the hospital for a couple of months and he will be able to meet his cousin when Sean gets realeased from hospital. I shared with him a few pictures of Sean in the incubator.
I gave Derek and customary hug & kiss and said "Goodbye".
He said, "Tell the little guy I said Hi".
I loved this and wanted to share.
It has been a incredible blessing for the last 12 years being Derek & Bryce's "Tia" (Auntie in Portuguese).
Now it's time to embark on this new journey of being Sean's Mommy.
With God all things are possible.

Sean Update 7.14.11
Yesterday was a "little" tough. Sean had been breathing on his own for over 24 hours with only the assistance of the bubble C-pap machine (continuous positive airway pressure).
He got tired of breathing on his own, so last night the Doc decided to give him additional assistance. He is on the C-Pap + 30 breaths per minute to help him. He's not ready to breathe on his own just yet.
We are being patient remembering that Sean was not due until October 3rd. He is having to learn how to eat and breathe on his own. These are things he wouldn't have needed to learn yet if still in the womb.
This morning I spoke with the RN and she said Sean is doing better. He has calmed down and was sleeping. She said he is doing well. And what he is experiencing is common behavior for Premies.
Thank you for your continued prayers.

I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold your with 'my righteous right hand' ".

Sean Update 7.13.11
Yesterday Sean had a good day. I enjoyed every moment of it, but was reminded by the RN that he will continue to have his good days and bad days. There are many ups and downs in the NICU.
Yesterday his feedings were increased to 20 cc's. He is doing really good on his feedings.
He had only a few "brady's" yesterday. He behaved himself most of the day. :)
I was on the phone this morning with the Night RN and she said Sean only had one "brady" all night! That is soooooooo awesome!
Yesterday, they changed Sean's C-Pap machine to what they call a bubble C-Pap.
The C-Pap machine he was on before was assisting him with his breathing, giving him 20 -30 breaths per minute. With the bubble C-Pap, he is doing all his breathing on his own. The bubble C-Pap machine pumps pressure into his lungs to help keep them inflated, but Sean is really do all the work. Way to go Sean!
I got to hold Sean again! This time it was even better. I held him for one hour and sang to him. He is so sweet. He loves his Mommy and loves being close to me. He is able to hear my heart beat (a familiar sound to him).
Thank you for your continued prayers. God is soooooooooo good to us!

Mommy holds Sean
Yesterday was awesome! Sean had a super experienced nurse who encouraged me to try to hold Sean again.
Finally...1 week and 5 days after Sean is born...Sean is placed on Mommy's chest for the first time. I held him for one hour.
It was an incredible experience. He was so content and at peace.
I love my baby boy! He is so precious.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Sean Update 7.12.11
Sean continues to do better. He is tolerating his feedings.
He put on 30 grams since yesterday. He is now at 2lbs. 6oz!
He is having less "brady's". They seem to occur during feeding time only.
He continues on the C-Pap to assist with his breathing.

Sean Update 7.11.11
Last night Sean's IV and PICC line were removed!
The IV and PICC line were providing Sean with electrolytes and other nutrients.
It's great that these were removed because if in too long they can lead to infection.
Feedings are still going well. He is getting 18cc's every 3 hours of Mommy's milk.
They may increase again today.
He only had two "brady's" during the night and it was during his feedings. The RN believes it's due to acid reflux.
Sean continues to tolerate feedings and he is still getting assistance with his breathing (w/ the C-Pap machine).
We are so blessed to be Sean's parents. God continues to strengthen us each day.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Proverbs 3:5-6

"How's our boy doing?"
Sean's Grandpa Sam (paternal grandpa) asked Daddy, "How's our boy doing?"
This touched my heart and I wanted to share....
I loved how he referred to Sean as "our boy".

Sean Update 7.10.11
Sean is doing better. He is having less "brady's". Yesterday, his feeding went up to 16cc's and today they will go up to 18cc's every 3 hours.
Yesterday the nurse and radiologist had to change the C-Pap tubing on his nose because it was lose.
He cried during this process. His cry is so low and soft because his lungs are so premature.
It was difficult to hear him cry. I wanted so badly to hold him and comfort him.
Soon....I will be able to give him Kangaroo care - skin to skin.
In the meantime, I will wait patiently until he is ready.
Thank you all for your support and prayers,

Tears of Joy & Tears of Sadness - There is healing in tears
There is healing in tears.
We are incredibly blessed to be parents. I am so excited to be a Mommy after all these years!
There are times when I'm at Sean's bedside and suddenly I begin to weep uncontrollably.
Most of the time, tears of joy of being a Mommy. Other times, tears of sadness that Sean is in an incubator with tubes and monitors. Yesterday, I wept tears of sadness, but it felt good to release and not deny my feelings.
I sang to him....it felt so good. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and a couple of Portuguese lullabies.
I know Sean is in good hands, but I can't help desire for him to be in my arms.
He will be in my arms one day when he is ready. For now, we will wait patiently and continue to hope for the best.
The RNs and Doctors say he is doing well. He is just experiencing the normal premature things that premies his size go through. I have hope that he will be able to breathe and eat on his own in time (Sean's time, not Mommy's time).

Sean Update 7.9.11
Sean had a good day yesterday. He is still having some episodes of Apnea/Bradycardia, but certainly less than before. Please keep praying that he will be able to breathe on his own. He will eventually be taken off the C-Pap, but for now he still needs assistance.
He is still eating well. His feedings have increased to 13 cc's every 3 hours.
Mommy's milk will help make him be healthy and strong.
Since yesterday, his weight is up 50 grams which brings him to 2 lbs. 5oz.
He had lost some weight since birth. This is typical for preterm and fullterm babies.
Now he's back up again.
His temperature and oxygen level are stable.

Sean Update 7.8.11
Sean is doing better. His feeding has been increased to 11cc's.
The caffeine helped with his breathing! He has experienced few episodes of Apnea/Bradycardia.
It turns out part of the problem was mechanical. The C-Pap tube that is inserted in his nose was out of place. The tube was adjusted by the RN and Radiologist and since then Sean is doing sooooo much better.
Thanks for your continued prayers!
"give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus"

Sean Update 7.7.11
Sean is doing well today. He is eating well. Each day his feedings are increased.
A week ago he was at 2 cc's every 3 hours and today he is at 11 cc's every 2 hours!
The biggest issue has been his breathing. He is so premature that he forgets to breathe at times = Apnea
When he forgets to breathe, his heart rate goes down = Bradycardia
The C-Pap machine along with caffeine helps him remember to breathe.
This is common in premies his size.
For those of you who don't know...Sean's gestational age at birth was 26 weeks + 3 days (Full term = 40 weeks). I was on bed rest for one week. We gained a whole week by me being on bed rest.
We pray for him every day and we are trusting God each step of the way.
We are hopeful that he will do well and come home in a couple of months.

Sean Update 7.6.11
Today Sean is 1 week old. He is doing well for his tiny size.
He's learning a lot. He's learning how to eat and breathe on his own.
Sean is being fed through an IV.
He is learning how to breathe with the assistance of a mini C-Pap machine.
Yesterday was our first attempt to have some "skin to skin" time with Mommy.
This is where they place Sean on Mommy's chest to help us bond. It's also comforting to him to hear Mommy's heart beat. A familar sound.
Sean wasn't quite ready, so it didn't happen.
In the NICU, they say Sean is the boss. He let's us know when he is ready.
Please continue to pray for our little man.

Sean squeezes Mommy's finger
On 7/3/11, when Sean was four days old, he made contact with Mommy for the first time.
I placed my hand in the incubator and offered Sean my index finger. He squeezed it. It was an incredible experience. I wept tears of joy. He is so precious. I love my little man.
